Police Officer: The Farmington Police Department is a progressive, nationally accredited agency, dedicated to providing community oriented police services. The department strives to maintain the professional standards which have established it as a leader in law enforcement in New Mexico. Divided into various Divisions such as Patrol, Detectives, and Administration, the Department proactively responds to community concerns through several community based programs. 155 people are employed by the department, 125 of which are sworn officers. The Police Department building is a two story structure which also houses the Municipal Court. An exercise room with free weights, Cybex weight machines, aerobic machines such as tread mills, and stepper are provided for the employees 24 hours a day. Separate locker rooms offer full-length lockers and showers.
ACADEMY PROCESS: Prior to assuming an assignment to the Patrol Division, uncertified officers will attend a local 25 week academy. The academy is operated with the cooperation of San Juan College. Cadets receive college credit while attending the academy. After successful graduation, cadets will undergo a 14 week Field Training Program before being released for solo duty. Applicants who currently hold officer certification, either in New Mexico or another state, may be eligible for lateral entry. A $5,000 bonus will be paid to lateral officers.
DUTIES: Successful graduates from the recruit academy are assigned to the Patrol Division. Police Officers have responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crimes, apprehension of criminals, and enforcement of laws and ordinances. The Police Department utilizes Community Policing and problem solving in providing services.

1.   Must be a United States citizen.

2.   Must hold a high school diploma or the equivalent.

3.   Must be willing, if approved, to refrain from participation in any subversive activity.

4.   Must not be convicted of any felony charge.

5.   Must not have pled guilty to any felony charge.

6.   Must not have entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge.

7.   Within a three-year period immediately preceding this application, not have been convicted, pled guilty to, or pled nolo contendere to any violation of any federal or state law or local ordinance relating to:

        a.  aggravated assault,

        b.  theft,

        c.  driving while intoxicated,

        d.  controlled substances, or

        e.  other crime involving moral turpitude.

8.   Must not be released or discharged under other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States.

9.   Must be able to successfully complete a physical fitness and wellness assessment.

10. Must be found, after examination by a licensed physician, to be free of any physical condition which might adversely affect their performance or completion of training as a police officer and/or fire fighter and emergency medical technician.

11. Must be found, after examination by a certified psychologist, to be free of any emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect their performance or completion of a training program as a police officer.
