This is a non-exempt, full-time position with benefits. Law enforcement personnel are employees who are empowered by State or local ordinance to enforce laws designed to maintain peace and order, protect life and property, and to prevent and detect crimes; who have the power to arrest; and who have undergone training in law enforcement. Police Officers are responsible for the maintenance of law and order within the city limits of Wasilla. The mission of a Police Officer is to protect and serve the community within the confines of the law. Successful applicants must be willing and able to work all shifts: day, evening, nights, including holidays, weekends, and overtime.
The Police Officer I position is perfect for those who are new to the field or just starting their career in law enforcement. The s tarting pay is set at $38.73 per hour or $80,558.40 Annually.
The Police Officer II is for lateral transfers who possess a minimum of one (1) year of certified law enforcement experience from a full-service law enforcement agency and are off probationary status. If your certification is from outside of Alaska and you are selected to join our department, your background will be reviewed to determine the proper course of training that will be required. Successful out of state candidates will attend an abbreviated lateral academy to familiarize themselves with police work in Alaska.
Laterals are given 1:1 credit on the pay scale for previous certified law enforcement experience

1 year: $43.04/hour – $89,523.20 Annually
2 years: $44.13/hour – $91,790.40 Annually
3 years: $45.27/hour – $94,161.16 Annually
4 years: $46.43/hour – $96,574.40 Annually
5 years: $47.62/hour - $99,049.60 Annually
up to 14 years: $58.18/hour - $121,014.40
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS: 4% swing shift differential; 7%-night shift differential

Patrol city limits, identify public safety hazards, prevent the commission of crimes, conduct business and residential security checks and actively seek out violators of the law.
Issue “warnings” and conduct arrests of citizens in violation of the law according to general guidelines provided by law and department policy.
Investigate traffic accidents and reported violations of the law.
Locate and interview witnesses, collect evidence and write detailed, accurate incident and/or crime reports.
Serve as a positive community role model to inspire voluntary cooperation and respect for the department's law enforcement and crime prevention programs.
Enforce federal, state and local laws consistent with legal code and in a fair manner, without regard to race, creed, social standing, economic class, political, or religious affiliation.
Interpret and uphold City ordinances.
Assist other public safety agencies as needed or on an assigned basis.
May be assigned other duties by the ranking officer and/or the Chief of Police.
PO II: May be required to serve as a Field Training Officer or other assignment designated as needing a Police Officer II.
PO I: Skilled at developing a rapport with other law enforcement officers to enhance the free flow of information and cooperation within the department.
