ELEVATE TO EL DORADO
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office is conducting this recruitment to establish an extra help eligible list. Extra Help assignments will not exceed 960 hours per fiscal year.
The current vacancy is in the Sheriff's Office Boating Unit. This is a seasonal, sworn position assigned to the El Dorado County waterways, normally from April through September each year. Incumbents will be assigned to both the West Slope and Tahoe Basin and are expected to learn and perform the full range of duties required.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to enforce boating and other laws, ordinances, rules and regulations fairly and impartially; possess the ability to operate a power boat in a safe manner; and will be knowledgeable of boating laws and boating safety.
To evaluate applications, thorough responses to supplemental questions are required. Those applicants who meet the minimum requirements for this position will also be required to complete a pre-background investigation questionnaire. Based on the information provided, applicants may be disqualified based on criteria set forth in Part 4, Section 406.1 of the County of El Dorado Personnel Rules.
Depending on the number of total applicants, those qualified applicants may be invited to an oral interview.
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and testimony, and providing information and assistance to the public.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Deputy Sheriff II is the experienced class in this series, fully competent to perform a wide range of peace officer duties. It is distinguished form Sheriff's Sergeant in that the latter supervises and trains deputies, in addition to participating in law enforcement activities.
Examples of Essential Functions
Patrols assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property, observe situations and deter crime by providing high visibility.
Responds to suspicious activities and answers emergency calls for service.
Enforces state and local laws and ordinances; issues verbal warnings and citations; pursues and apprehends suspects and requests assistance as required.
Investigates juvenile and adult criminal activity and incidents as the assigned detective.
Coordinates crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses, overseeing collection and preservation of physical evidence.
Restores order, protects life and property, and maintains the peace at public gatherings and in conflict situations.
Prepares and documents cases, completes reports and records, and prepares and maintains other logs and records.
Transports criminals to the Courts, hospitals and various other locations.
Serves as bailiff, maintaining order and security in assigned courts.
Serves civil papers to County residents; researches and locates person to be served; provides Coroner/Public Administrator services as assigned.
Serves as a coordinator or team member in such special projects as drug enforcement, livestock investigations and boating regulation enforcement.
Provides traffic and crowd control as necessary; participates in special details and assignments, including K-9 and Search and Rescue; may serve as field training officer.
Retrieves, identifies and returns found property and/or evidence to owners.
Provides emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons and requests additional response.
Provides information, directions and other services and assistance to the public.
Coordinates with and serves as back up to other local law enforcement agencies.

Where college degrees and/or college course credits are required, degrees and college units must be obtained from an accredited college or university. Courses from non-accredited institutions will not be evaluated for this requirement.
Level II: Must be currently enrolled or have successfully completed a California P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Academy and possess a current California P.O.S.T Academy Certificate.
NOTE: The above qualifications are typically accepted way of obtaining the required knowledge and skills.
Other Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license. Pursuant to Government Code, Section 1031, must be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or have proof of passing the general education development test (GED). Must be willing to work evening, nights, weekends and holiday shifts. Must be able to maintain a firearms qualification.
