THE OPPORTUNITY Deputy Sheriff Trainees have the opportunity to actively participate in the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) peace officer training academy. Throughout the training process, Trainees will learn to serve and protect the communities of El Dorado County while building the knowledge, skills, and judgement to uphold the Sheriff's Vision of total enforcement on crime and criminals and total care for victims, witnesses, and the community. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to: Attend the peace officer academy and actively participate in all studies, assignments, and tasks. Develop proficiency in criminal law, arrest and control techniques, use of firearms report writing, vehicle operation, first aid and CPR, narcotics identification, crowd control, court room demeanor, public relations, patrol procedures, physical conditioning and training, and any other subjects included in the academy. Sheriff’s Personnel Unit will assess your application to determine if you are minimally qualified using the following recommendations. Any combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Education and Experience : Equivalent to graduation from high school or have proof of passing the general education development test. No experience is required; however, volunteer or paid experience in a law enforcement support area and college-level coursework is desirable. License and Certifications: Pursuant to Government Code, Section 1031, must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment. Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California or Nevada Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record. Successful completion of a California POST certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one (1) year of appointment. RECRUITMENT PROCESS The Sheriff’s Personnel Unit will screen all applications to identify qualified candidates. Those applicants who meet the minimum requirements for this position will be required to complete a P re-Investigative Questionnaire (PIQ) . Based on the information provided, applicants may be disqualified based on criteria set forth in Part 7, Section 706.1 of the County of El Dorado Personnel Rules and in conjunction with Sheriff’s Selection Policy 1000. After screening, qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the recruitment process. Please refer to Sheriff's Policy 1000 - Selection Standards for more information regarding disqualifying events in an applicant's background. Candidates will be invited to participate in the POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB). Applicants who have already taken the PELLETB within the past twelve (12) months of the scheduled examination date may elect to transfer that examination score or sit for the examination again; you must contact Sheriff's Personnel prior to the scheduled exam date to request that your previous score be transferred. Per California POST, applicants may not take the PELLETB exam more than once within a thirty (30) day calendar period. A T-score of 48.0 or higher is considered passing. All candidates must participate in the Physical Ability Test (PAT) . No prior scores may be used. If it is determined that you meet the minimum qualifications and are therefore eligible to participate, you will receive a link to schedule the written and physical examinations. The PAT and PELLETB are scheduled for: Saturday, November 7th, 2026 Those candidates who receive passing scores for both the PAT and PELLETB will be invited to participate in the oral examination process. The oral exam will be utilized to determine an applicant's ranking and placement on the eligibility list. The oral examination consists of candidates responding to technical questions designed to elicit a candidate's qualifications for the job. The panel members will evaluate each candidate's responses based on predetermined criteria. This oral exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 16th, 2026 .
