Minimum Requirements to Become a Correctional Deputy California Driver’s License Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application (no max age) Must have a U.S. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Disqualifiers Conviction of misdemeanor domestic violence Currently on probation DUI violations within the last 3 years Felony convictions Lying or withholding any information Getting Started The hiring process starts when you select the Correctional Deputy career path. The application and selection process consists of nine steps: Online Application via Government Jobs Written Examination (unproctored, computerized assessment) Physical Agility Test (PAT) Pre-Background Questionnaire Background Application via eSOPH Extensive Background Investigation, including interview Polygraph Examination Pre-Employment Psychological Assessment Medical Exam, including a drug and alcohol screening (refusal to submit to testing or positive results for drugs, alcohol, or unexplained legal prescription drugs is an automatic disqualification). Getting Hired as a Trainee If you successfully pass all of the steps we provisionally hire you as a correctional deputy trainee and send you to our 3-month basic correctional deputy training academy. Training When you enter the basic Standards and Training for Corrections ( STC ) academy you are employed as a Correctional Deputy Trainee. You will receive pay and benefits during your academy training. Training The training academy is approximately 12 weeks long and includes the following: Baton techniques, chemical agents, and less-lethal munitions Defensive tactics Drill and ceremony Emergency response training, first aid, and CPR certification Hostage management Interview and interrogation Physical exercise Upon successful completion of the academy you are assigned to one of our five correctional facilities to work 12-hour shifts including weekends and holidays Probation The Correctional Deputy Trainee position is the entry level classification while in the 12-week Basic Correctional Deputy Academy. Upon successfully completing the academy, Correctional Deputy Trainees are eligible for promotion to Correctional Deputy I. After completing an 18-month probationary period between the two classifications, incumbents are eligible to promote to Correctional Deputy II. Written Examination The written exam consists of two sections: Reading Comprehension English Grammar and Punctuation There is no study guide available to prepare for this exam. Our exam results are not transferable to other agencies, and we do not accept outside agency test scores either. Qualified applicants will receive an email via Government Jobs with a unique exam link. It is recommended that the exam be completed on a computer, though the exam is also accessible by tablet and mobile device. Physical Agility Test After you have successfully completed the written examination, you will receive an email invitation to self-schedule your PAT via Government Jobs. The PAT consists of three events: Sit-ups: A minimum of 20 sit-ups must be completed within 60 seconds Push-ups: A minimum of 20 push-ups must be completed within 60 seconds 1 ½ mile run: The run must be completed within 15 minutes, with no stopping or walking You will be given one attempt to complete each event on the day of your PAT.
