Sign-On Bonus: $5,000 1st Installment: $2,500 Upon Hire 2nd Installment: $2,500 Upon Successful Completion of Probationary Period Under general supervision, perform a wide variety of patrol and related duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of laws, codes, and ordinances; conduct surveillance; perform investigative work; control traffic flow and enforce traffic regulations; participate in and provides support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs; respond to various emergencies and calls for service; assist in the preparation of cases and testifies in court; serve in specialized departmental roles as assigned; provide information and assistance to the public; and perform related duties, as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the journey-level class within the Police series, performing the full range of law enforcement duties, working under the general direction of a Police Sergeant. Incumbents function independently when performing day-to-day operations and are given latitude for decision-making. Police Officer is distinguished from Police Officer Trainee by the completion of a California POST Basic Academy and full responsibility as a sworn safety officer. A Police Officer is distinguished from a Senior Police Officer by the latter's responsibility for training, guidance, and lead supervision of Officers. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Perform a variety of community policing duties to maintain a highly visible presence within the community for the purpose of deterring crime, maintaining good community relations, and providing assistance to the public. Patrol the City to observe and address suspicious or potential criminal activity; respond to emergency calls for service, including, but not limited to, disturbances, burglaries, vehicle accidents, domestic disputes, suspicious activities, deaths, and other incidents to protect public safety, life, and property; resolve problems and diffuse situations; enforce state and local laws, ordinances, and codes. Provide information, directions, and assistance to the public in a variety of situations; take reports and assist the public with complaints or unusual situations. Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic situations; stop and warn drivers against unlawful practices; issue citations and make arrests as necessary; assist motorists with inoperable vehicles; provide direction and traffic control in accident or incident situations, special events, or other congested situations. Make arrests and serve warrants and subpoenas; take individuals into custody; transport individuals to court for medical clearance and/or booking at a longer-term facility; search and fingerprint prisoners. Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed; prepare and maintain other related reports, logs, records, and accurate files. Retrieve and request information involving arrests and subpoenas; file complaints and perform other work related to the processing of misdemeanor and felony complaints; serve writs, warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents. Secure crime scenes and evidence; interview suspects, victims, complainants, and witnesses; document interviews; interrogate suspects; coordinate and conduct complete and detailed investigations of crimes involving juveniles and adults.
