The City of Oxford is seeking to establish an eligibility list for the position of full-time Police Officer. This is a Classified position. Pay for lateral entry applicants will be based on years of full-time police service with another agency up to 100% of the pay range for applicants with three or more years of qualifying service. The exam will be administered through the National Testing Network at https://www.nationaltestingnetwork.com/publicsafetyjobs/exams.cfm . A minimum score of 70% is required to move forward. Additional credit for education, military service, or City of Oxford service credit will be applied to passing scores in accordance with Rule V of the Classified Service Procedures and Personnel Appeals Board Rules and Regulations. Proof of additional credit must be turned in to the Human Resources Manager at HR@cityofoxford.org within ten (10) business days of completion of the written examination deadline. Physical Fitness Test The time and location for the physical fitness assessment will be provided after the application and written test phases have been completed. Police Division staff will administer the test, and applicants will be required to sign a waiver to participate. This test will be pass/fail and does not contribute to the overall ranking list. Candidates who fail will be removed from the eligibility list. Link to physical fitness benchmarks. Lateral Candidates: Lateral candidates must have at least three (3) years of full-time continuous Police Officer experience, a current OPOTA certification, and must be currently employed or have been employed within the past 365 days (from date of application deadline) as a full-time police officer in Ohio. Lateral candidates must still submit a written test score, but will have the physical agility test waived. Lateral entry officers will enter at the salary step commensurate with their prior years of full-time service (2.5% per six months of experience up to three years). Interviews & Beyond Candidates who are in the top five of the eligibility list will be interviewed and begin the background process. Additional interviews may be required. As candidates are excluded from the Eligibility List, the next viable candidates may be interviewed. Candidates are removed from the eligibility list after one year. Conditional Offer of Employment A recommendation for hire will be from the top five viable candidates on the Eligibility List. Once a conditional offer of employment is made, candidates will continue in the background process to include a polygraph examination, psychological exam, and medical exam. Before You Apply While we are very glad that you are interested in employment with the Oxford Police Division, we think it is vitally important at the onset of this process to communicate to you the significance of our organizational values and how they play a role in hiring new employees. The screening process is multi-faceted and will, by necessity, probe into your life experiences to make sure they align with our requirements. Your integrity and honesty (two of our key values) will be evaluated, and it starts with this letter. There are some life experiences that will automatically disqualify you from employment with the Oxford Police Division. The purpose of this letter is to provide an overview of these disqualifiers so that you can make an informed decision on whether to apply or to seek other employment. In addition, we want to give you a little insight into our organization; and one of the best ways to do that is to share our mission, vision and value statements at the end of this letter. Disqualifiers: Arrest and conviction of a felony. Arrest and conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude (e.g., theft). Arrest and conviction for domestic violence. Undetected crimes – If you have perpetrated or been a party to a criminal act which has been undetected by any law enforcement agency that in the State of Ohio would be a felony offense, a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, or domestic violence, and that undetected crime is not revealed during the interview process but instead is disclosed as part of the polygraph examination, the Oxford Division of Police will not consider you for employment. Not having a valid operator’s license. Driving record with multiple offenses, an element of which is carelessness or disregard for other motorists/pedestrians.
