This position is ONLY open to applicants who:
Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
Have a valid driver’s license
Are currently a Utah POST Certified Police Officer, or
Are currently certified to perform the functions of a police officer in a different state and can successfully obtain a waiver from Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Out-of-state certified officers are encouraged to begin the Utah POST Waiver process as soon as possible to facilitate Utah Certification Testing prior to, or about, August 3rd.
Hiring processes will be initiated based upon application and/or interview scoring.
Interview and testing dates will be arranged after the applications have been reviewed for eligibility. We will work with applicants to accommodate their scheduling needs and accommodate in-person and video interviews.
For applicants who are certified in a different state and make the hiring list, limited pre-employment processes will begin based upon a conditional job offer. Once the applicant obtains their Utah Certification, the remainder of the hiring process will be expedited.

General hiring order, across all hiring lists for Police Officer I, II, III applicants will be based upon the applicants’ availability to start work (taking into consideration the pre-employment screening processes an applicant has completed and/or needs to complete).
Salary & Benefits
Pay will be determined based upon experience and qualifications compared against current St. George Police Officers’ tenure and wages. Starting salary will be determined based on years of service and qualifications. Ranges as of December 2025:
Police Officer I – Starting Salary:
63 ($69,982 - $104,972/year)
Police Officer II – Starting Salary:
65 ($73,524 - $110,286/year)
Police Officer III – Starting Salary:
67 ($77,246 - $113,230/year)

Position SummaryPerforms a variety of highly trained law enforcement procedures for the City of St. George to protect and maintain the well-being of the general population of the City(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)
Police Officer I
:
Effects an arrest within training guidelines and department policy, and uses that amount of force which is reasonable and necessary in accordance with policy and law.
Prepares investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
Exercises independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.
Operates a law enforcement vehicle during the day and night in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, high winds, rain, ice, and snow.
Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
Pursues fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting a law enforcement patrol vehicle; lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling oneself up over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces; climbing through openings; jumping over obstacles, ditches, and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces; and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
Loads, unloads, aims, and fires, from a variety of body positions, a handgun, rifle, and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
Performs searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas, which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
Engages in law enforcement patrol functions, including such things as working rotating shifts, walking on foot patrol, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.
Effectively communicates with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
Demonstrates communication skills in court and other formal settings.
Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.
Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered in an antagonistic environment.
