This is the first level in the Deputy Sheriff series. This class is a fully certified Peace Officer responsible for performing duties in assigned divisions of the department: Court Operations Division, Field Operations Division, Support Operations Division, and Administrative Services Division. The position may require duties within the Jail Operations Division, based on the needs of the agency and at the discretion of the Sheriff or his designee. This job is a safety-sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace. • Performs general law enforcement duties, including responding to calls, assisting with the apprehension of suspects or inmates, conducting searches for contraband, ensuring the proper handling of evidence, testifying in court, warrant service and serving civil processes and court orders. • Prepares proper paperwork for affidavits, reports, warrants, confirms validity, and serves documents as required. • Maintains daily logs of shift activity and prepares various reports. • Escorts and transports inmates to and from various departments, courts, and appointments. • Resolves disputes between the general public and prepares reports on crimes, violations and accidents as they are encountered in the county. • Completes reports relating to the arrest and incarceration of subjects in and outside the county and performs searches of those individuals and inventories, confiscates, or distributes property related to the case. • Issues citations as well as makes arrests for violations of laws and ordinances. • Analyzes evidence, reports, and intelligence in the investigation of incidents and crimes. • Maintains safety and security in the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, Courts Annex, Detention Center, and other county locations. • Attends daily roll call to receive briefing information and instruction concerning duties and criminal activities. • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Positions assigned to the Court Operations Division may be responsible for: • Serves as a deputy in charge of courtroom security to which he is assigned and keeps order in the court. • Transports inmates while performing court security functions. • Serves warrants and civil papers. • Works with and backs up other officers and agencies. • Performs daily security checks of assigned area to include courtrooms, holding cells and adjacent areas before all court proceedings. • Assists in bringing detainees under physical control in routine as well as emergency situations in or on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice & Administration Center. • Maintains security screening checkpoints which include the operation of x-ray machines and metal detectors. • Performs routine security checks throughout the building. • Handles arraignments and other court calendars as necessary. • Documents court dispositions or orders of the court. • Completes reports and other written assignments as directed by the supervisor. • Performs law enforcement duties as required. Positions assigned to the Field Operations Division may be responsible for: • Conducts thorough and in-depth investigations into specific criminal activities, such as drug trafficking, child exploitation, and other designated areas. • Gathers intelligence, collects evidence, and analyzes data to build cases against individuals involved in the targeted criminal activities. • Collaborates with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to exchange information, coordinate joint operations, and enhance investigative efforts. • Utilizes advanced investigative techniques, including surveillance, undercover operations, and informant management, to gather information and evidence. • Monitors and analyzes trends, patterns, and emerging threats related to the targeted criminal activities, providing strategic recommendations and action plans. • Prepares and executes search warrants, arrest warrants, and other legal documents as required for the investigation and apprehension of suspects. • Interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects to gather information and elicit testimonies, maintaining the highest level of professionalism and adherence to legal protocols. • Maintains accurate and detailed case files, records, and documentation in accordance with departmental policies and legal requirements. • Stays updated on the latest investigative techniques, technological advancements, and legal developments related to targeted criminal activities. • Provides support and expertise to other law enforcement units and officers when required, including assistance in executing search warrants or apprehending fugitives. • Serves as Surveillance Officer for drug court. • Conducts required home visits on active participants. • Completes curfew checks. • Carries out random field drug testing. • Completes residence verification for referrals. • Attends weekly Treatment Accountability Court hearings. Positions assigned to the Civil Process Section may be responsible for: • Civil Processing/Eviction Unit. • Drug Treatment and Accountability Unit. Positions assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section may be responsible for: • Transportation Unit. • Extradition Unit. • Family Violence Unit. • Sex Offenders Registry Unit. • Warrant Unit. • K-9 Unit. Positions assigned to the Mental Health Section may be responsible for: • Mental Health Task Force. Positions assigned to the Special Investigation Section may be responsible for: • Jail Intelligence Unit. • TRACE Unit. • Gang Unit. • Fugitive Unit. • GMTF/TFO Unit.
